Making a difference: Case Studies - Jackie

Dycem Non slip

Jackie is a 40 year old lady who had a spinal injury a year ago. She is awaiting adaptations to her kitchen to make it wheelchair accessible. Whilst she is waiting for these to be completed, I have been working with her to enable her to be as independent as possible in the kitchen.

Jackie loves drinking tea and wants to be able to make a cup for herself. She is currently putting her cup on a lap tray and pouring the kettle into it. Jackie was concerned about the cup tipping and scalding her, particularly if she had a leg spasm. We decided to put a Dycem mat on her tray and to use a larger cup in order to make the cup more stable on the lap tray.
